Katarina began ice-skating at age five. When her talent for skating began to show and she was accepted to the Karl-Marx-Stadt school that specializes in children who have a sporting ability. The coach Jutta was also at the school. Witt became a star in 1982, when she finished second at the World Championships at Copenhagen. Since that time the elegance and grace of her skating caught everyone's attention. Her dominance began in the sport. Olympic triumph at Sarajevo, in the Sarajevo Winter Games of 1984, Katarina Witz won the women's bronze medal in figure skating following an extremely close contest. A few years later she took home another contest that was even more competitive. The free skate she took was a loss, but her gold medal came from the performances she made in both the compulsory figures (short program) and mandatory figures. Witt became the first female to take home a gold medal in both male and female figure skating ever since Sonja Hiene. Hall of Fame Witt had a great deal of success as an acting career, however she returned to figure skating to participate in the Lillehammer Winter Games of 1994. Although she did not win a gold medal, Witt won over the audience. Witt was admitted into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1995.
